Client: Moonbeam Trading Company
Problem Question: How might Moonbeam Trading Company sustainably and cost-effectively develop long-term thriving communities in Northern Ontario?
As part of my Business Design and Leading Innovation courses during my Master at OCADU, I worked with real-world client Moonbeam Trading Company. The organization has several business functions, and my team focused on their housing development project in Northern Ontario.
Evaluating the risks associated with Moonbeam’s current affordable home development business model in Northern Ontario highlighted five main challenges:
- Current state of housing and community development in Northern Ontario
- Limited quality infrastructure in Northern Ontario
- Costs of building elements, affordability, and COVID-19
- Building and developing relationships with existing communities while attracting newcomers
- Considerately and ethically launch a new venture with minimal risk
Our team iterated on multiple business models and after evaluating them with our design criteria, we developed the EcoLiving model. EcoLiving offers three key value propositions to the Eco-conscious millennial:
- Affordability relative to the Southern Ontario market
- Customizability
- Sustainably developed
With this model, we developed an implementation plan for three key strategies:
- Branding
- Co-Creation
- Sustainability
We integrated sustainable and future-oriented design models and recommendations. We employed longtermism, participatory methods, and Seven Generations thinking to ensure this development project is beneficial to all stakeholders and the environment.
